- Eleanor Burlingham Award Winner -

Congratulations to Francisca A. Casals

Environmental conservation begins at home with service that strengthens our local communities.

Francisca A. Casals is the year 2005 recipient of the Rockland County Conservation Association’s Eleanor Burlingham Award. Graduating this year from Nyack High School, she has devoted herself to projects of concern to our Rockland home community.

Mentored by Nyack’s teacher of Advanced Placement Environmental Studies Tom Perry, Francisca has embraced the project to get the Long Path of New York-New Jersey Trail Conference off heavily trafficked state road Route 9W in Upper Nyack and re-routed over terrain of West Hook Mountain. She has hiked the area again and again to learn its topography. She has written letters to Town Board members and met with officials to encourage the purchase of the remaining parcels of land there to preserve open space.

Francisca says, “I am interested in peoples’ relationship to the environment”. She was galvanized by the opportunity to promote the Long Path’s move to preserve the mountain’s historic vistas for continuous public enjoyment.

Convinced of the need for mandated open space, she says, “What I like least about Rockland County’s environment is the development everywhere you look. Environmental groups need to obtain as much land as possible or convince towns to buy it for conservation. We need to continue preserving the undeveloped land that already exists.”

How has Francisca arrived at this focus? “My mother loves the outdoors so our vacations have consisted of walks, hikes, and kayaking adventures. Through kayaking, my interest in marine biology grew and I studied it on my own until after the sixth grade when I took a summer course in oceanography at the University of Rhode Island.”

The need to preserve open space and plan development with protective conservation in mind has led her to “thinking about a career in environmental law”.   MR. Perry says, “I believe that Francisca will stay involved with environmental preservation for her whole life.”

As Francisca graduates from Nyack, she looks forward to a summer in service with Americorps. Jeanne Nelson, Director at Large
